Kevin Pietersen Makes Shock England Return, Takes Up Mentor's Role In White-Ball Team

Fourteen years to the day after the ECB shut the door on him for the first time, Kevin Pietersen is back in the England setup. On 7 September 2012, the former England captain was left off the central contracts list following the infamous 'Textgate' scandal: messages to South African players, insulting then-captain Andrew Strauss. Dropped from the squad after the Leeds Test, Pietersen's fallout with his teammates was considered irreparable at the time. On Monday, the former England captain was appointed the 'specialist mentor' for England's white-ball squad as part of the build-up to next year's ODI World Cup.

Pietersen mentored Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025, the same edition England captain Harry Brook withdrew from to priortise international cricket. Raised in South Africa, Pietersen's local knowledge should particularly help the Brook-led side as McCullum's England is building towards next year's ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Pietersen feels immensely proud to have been asked to help Harry Brook's men on their journey to win the World Cup in Africa. "Putting on the England uniform again for the first time since 2014 is a profound honour and a deeply special moment," Pietersen said. Before Pietersen's appointment, Brook's England capped off a historic twin series win over India.

"We have an incredibly talented white-ball squad, and I am excited to get in the trenches and work relentlessly hard with these players to maximise their potential. To be a part of Brendon's think tank over the next 12 months is a fantastic opportunity, and I cannot wait to get started," Pietersen added.

Welcoming Pietersen's appointment, head coach Brendon McCullum said he is looking forward to the batters working with the former world No. 1. "I've got immense respect for KP and what he's achieved in the game. He's had an amazing impact on English cricket, so for someone with his experience, knowledge and stature to want to play a role with this team is a fantastic result," said McCullum.

According to the white-ball head coach, Pietersen has a unique understanding of what it takes to perform at the highest level, something that will be hugely valuable to players. Joining the coaching staff, which will also include Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor, Pietersen's first assignment will be the upcoming twin series against Sri Lanka. The 46-year-old will also be part of this winter's tours to Australia and South Africa, before returning next summer for the home series against Pakistan and New Zealand, followed by the World Cup.
