Over and out from Colombo - Sri Lanka might have lost the series, but there is plenty for them to draw genuine encouragement from as they look toward the future. Chances dented - Shubman Gill is requested to collect the trophy. He does so with grace and walks towards his teammates, who wait for their captain to join them for the photographs behind the CHAMPIONS board. With a draw the eventual result, India's hopes of reaching the WTC final have taken a serious hit. They remain stuck in fifth on the table with their PCT slipping to 51.52. The road ahead looks tricky too. Their next Test assignment is a two-match series in New Zealand, though there is a breather of sorts first, with a couple of white-ball series sandwiched in between. The opening Test in Wellington gets underway on 19th November, before India host Australia for a five-match Test series in January 2027. And with the margin for error all but gone, they will need to win almost every remaining Test to keep their finals dream alive.
The series-winning captain of India - Shubman Gill reflects candidly on a long, draining Test, noting that his side fielded for close to 250 overs and did everything within their means. Looking back, he does not feel there was much they could have done differently. He is quick to highlight the positives too, drawing lessons even from the opposition, calling Sri Lanka's fightback tremendous to witness. On the batting, he singles out Devdutt for a brilliant showing and credits KL Rahul for a solid contribution as well, while also giving full marks to a bowling unit he felt performed admirably throughout. Looking ahead, he speaks of exciting times for this Indian side, stressing the need for consistency in preparation. He flags Manav Suthar in particular, praising the consistency of his bowling and predicting he will be a crucial asset for India in the years to come. On the road ahead, Gill looks forward to the tour of New Zealand in November before a strong home season follows. PLAYER OF THE SERIES - DEVDUTT PADIKKAL walks up to collect his award for his outstanding batting display throughout the series. He scored 328 runs across two matches, including a couple of centuries. Devdutt says it feels great to win the award, although it would have meant more had India managed to win this game. He is happy to contribute to the team's efforts and feels the two pitches were quite similar, with this surface also being pretty slow. Padikkal says playing spin requires a lot of clarity, with plenty of conversations within the team as everyone came in with their own plans. Adds that representing the country is always a matter of pride, while emphasising that the key is to keep working hard, stay focused on what is within your control and make sure you are ready for the next opportunity.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - SONAL DINUSHA deservedly wins the award for his historic batting display, scoring twin centuries in the match. On his preparations, Sonal is quick to share the credit, pointing to the coaching staff and his family as the people who helped him get these runs. He puts it down to the quality of the sessions he has put in, which he feels reflected directly in the runs on the board. Reflecting on Day 5, he is quick to praise the tail enders, crediting their resistance at the crease while noting he simply tried to read the situation and play his own role as best he could. Asked about his record, he admits to being genuinely pleased, saying his only goal was to get runs on the board for the team when they were down. He says that satisfaction stayed with him through the day. On facing India specifically, he keeps it simple, calling it a pleasure as a player to score runs against a side of that calibre.
The captain of Sri Lanka - Dhananjaya de Silva believes it is important to identify and nurture talent for the future, and credits the selectors and coaching staff for allowing the youngsters to come in and express themselves. Feels that the return of the injured players is a good headache to have, with those who played in their absence now making it difficult for them to walk straight back into the XI.

A gamble that didn't quite pay off - Was enforcing the follow-on the right call? It is one of those decisions that will invite debate from both sides of the fence. The optimist will argue India had every reason to go for it. A 213-run first-innings lead, tired legs in the Sri Lankan camp and the uncertainty surrounding the weather. The pessimist, meanwhile, will point to the toll it took on India's own bowlers, forced straight back out into the field without the luxury of batting again to rest up, and a pitch that had by then flattened out into a graveyard for anything other than sheer patience. Because spare a thought for India's bowlers too, made to toil through a punishing 243.4 overs across both innings, 89.4 first up and another 154 second time around.
A series won, not swept - India, on the other hand, would be highly disappointed with how the last couple of days panned out. India owned the first two days with the bat, mounting a mammoth 503/9 declared. Devdutt Padikkal set the tone with a magnificent 117, Dhruv Jurel followed with an extremely fluent 115, and Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill both chipped in with valuable runs. With the ball, Manav Suthar was the standout performer of the series, showing a real knack for striking at crucial junctures and finishing with 16 wickets, the most by any bowler in the series and full justification for his selection. Ravindra Jadeja was not far behind either, enjoying a fine series of his own with 8 wickets to his name. Debutant Saransh Jain had to wait patiently for his first Test wicket, but eventually finished with three. Among the pacers, Prasidh Krishna looked the more threatening with his raw pace, while Mohammed Siraj, by contrast, was curiously underused, sent down just 26 overs across this entire match.
The tail wagged and how! Also worth flagging are the contributions from Sri Lanka's lower-order batters. The likes of Keshara Nuwantha, Prabath Jayasuriya and Lahiru Kumara all showed genuine staying power at the crease, holding firm for long stretches across both innings. Frustrating a quality attack like India's is a kind of resistance that is no small feat to achieve. In the second innings specifically, with chips down at 229/6 and just a slender 16-run lead to start Day 5, they dug in remarkably well, with the last four stands lasting almost fifty overs.
Unearthed a gem - After swallowing a bitter pill in Galle, Sri Lanka have responded with an admirable batting performance here in Colombo, and there is plenty for them to draw genuine encouragement. Asitha Fernando's four-wicket haul, Pasindu Sooriyabandara announcing himself in the Test arena and Keshara Nuwantha's gritty resistance with the bat, practically making the case for himself as a batter, all point to a side finding its feet again. But topping it all is one name - Sonal Dinusha. He batted, batted and just kept batting, showing even the seniors in his team how it's done. Sonal Dinusha looks destined for greatness. The composure, technique and temperament he has displayed across this series carry echoes of a young Kumar Sangakkara. It is still early days, but Sri Lanka may just have unearthed a truly special talent for the future. He rarely smiles, and you will not catch him with a fist pump or an animated expression, but make no mistake, he has quietly wiped the smiles off the Indian faces with twin tons in this Test.
And that’s that - The two teams have agreed to a draw. Sri Lanka have come away with a famous draw. 24 hours ago, this did not seem like a possibility, but gritty resistance from Sonal Dinusha and Co. made it possible. India win the series, but they will have to settle for just four points from the draw in this Test instead of the 12 they were searching for with a win. Harsha Bhogle informs that this is only the third drawn Test in Sri Lanka in the last 10 years.
